Congo Art Works and africamuseum@matonge2016

Collaborative Exhibitions in Belgium

07.10.2016 – 22.01.2017 - The Royal Museum for Central Africa produced two combined exhibitions within the frame of the SWICH Collaborative Exhibition project: “Congo Art Works. Popular Painting” at BOZAR Brussels as well as the project in public space “africamuseum@matonge2016”.

CONGO ART WORKS. POPULAR PAINTING

An exhibition of the Royal Museum for Central Africa, in collaboration with the Centre for Fine Arts Brussels
07.10.2016 – 22.01.2017

Congolese popular painting is inextricably linked to daily life in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It bears the stamp of the collective memory, as illustrated by the exhibition 'Congo Art Works. Popular Painting'. The exhibition presents a selection of portraits, landscapes and allegorical paintings as well as canvases inspired by urban and historical themes. These works were produced between 1968 and 2012. Humour is present even when the subject is serious: the paintings encourage a critical reflection on religion, politics and social issues. A selection of historical objects, archival photographs, drawings and records broaden the perspective by establishing links with other, older Congolese art forms.
A unique insight.

africamuseum@matonge2016

Following the success of its first edition, africamuseum@matonge is back!

Starting 17 September 2016, the Royal Museum for Central Africa joined forces with Matonge shopkeepers to offer you a selection of archive photos. Photos are displayed on the windows of participating establishments, along with a new installation by artist Sammy Baloji in the indispensable Porte de Namur shopping gallery.
The vivid photographs were taken in major Congolese urban centres in the 1990s. Most of these archive documents show advertising frescoes created by painters to the glory of commerce and Congolese popular memory! The selection for africamuseum@matonge2016 joyfully announced the RMCA exhibition Congo Art Works. Popular painting to be held at BOZAR.
