Creative Dialogue MuCEM Marseille

Lab Meeting Co-Creation Labs

LAB MEETING, CREATIVE DIALOGUE, «CONTEMPORARY ART IN NON-ART MUSEUMS»
February 25 - 26, 2016, at MuCEM in Marseille. In the lab meeting SWICH partner museums reflected on experiences around collaborations with artists.

Organized by Mikael Mohamed, Jean-Roch Bouiller and Aude Fanlo
The lab meeting allowed four SWICH partner museums (National Museum of World Cultures/NL, Weltmuseum Wien/AT, Slovene Ethnographic Museum/SI, Mucem/FR) to share experiences on the artist residencies they organized. The discussions focused on concepts, expectations, processes and results. This pragmatic exchange went along with some more general thoughts about interferences between contemporary art and “non-art” museums. Performing “in situ”, curating exhibitions or creating new artworks alongside displayed collections: artists intervene at museums in different ways. What interpretation, what shift in the status of an object, what re-contextualization or what creative rearrangement can the reinterpretation of a collection by an artist uncover? What difficulties should we overcome as part of this dialogue in order to make sure it does not come across as artificial or conflictual? What different kinds of relations with audiences can arise from this fertile confrontation?
